Notepad X is an open source text editor intended to replace the Windows Notepad. It integrates a number of features and functions that make it a handy tool for those who manage plain text notes and also for developers. Among its most notable features is its tabbed interface allowing users to edit a number of documents simultaneously, and navigate through multiple text notes in a more comfortable manner.
The program offers all the basic text-editing functions one expects to find in such an application, namely, cut, copy and paste, as well as undo/redo, and find/replace, all of them accessible from the main menu, the toolbar, or through hotkeys. It also integrates line-numbering, and code highlighting for more than 15 programming languages (PHP, C#, Java, VBNET, XML, HTML, etc.)
The most interesting part is the General Options menu, where we can define aspects such as the language of the interface, the font to be used in the notes, the set of icons, etc. From there, we can also activate the ‘lite version’, that disables extra options and makes the program more lightweight. Shortcuts, on the other hand, can be fully customized, and it is also possible to expand the application functions by downloading plugins from the author’s site. The program comes with 5 plugins, the File Explorer being the most notable one. There is also a ‘favorites’ section, where we can organize notes in the way we find most convenient.
The program is only 624KB, and uses up very few resources. It is available for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, and requires Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0.
